Come to the next Hack!Friday to learn about how we built a wheelchair out of scrap wood and spite!
On 16.10.26 at 19:42 vox, lxlxth and ammoth will share the history of the project, the successes they’ve enjoyed, the challenges they’ve faced, and how YOU TOO could build a wheelchair.
After years of struggles with the health insurance company and months of vox being stuck at home waiting for wheelchair repairs, their friends took matters into their own hands and built a wooden wheelchair frame, while battling with the proprietary power assist Wheeldrive wheels.
In this talk they will share:
- How they modified open source wheelchair plans to make them more robust
- The trial and error process of creating the first working prototype
- The challenges they are still hoping to solve
- Ideas on how you could do something similar with what you have on hand
- The impact this has had on vox’s life and their thoughts on why everyone should have the ability to modify and repair their own mobility aids
The talk will be presented in English and will last around 45 minutes. Afterwards there will be time for relaxed socializing (perhaps with Tschunk?) and discussions about the project.
